What is a chemical peel?

Skin peels are a type of skin resurfacing technique used in an effort to smooth out a minor scar, acne scars, pigment discolorations, blemishes, blackheads or wrinkles. Chemical peels are non-invasive and designed to improve the integrity and quality of the skin through unique formulations that target at a cellular level. Although, chemical peels are not advised for keloids and deep scars.

A chemical peel is essentially the application of acid to your skin, often the face, to remove the upper skin layers. What the acid does is cause a mild, superficial burn. Then the burn blisters and peels, causing skin appearance improvement because of newly regenerated skin.

How deeply your skin is burned depends largely on the strength of the acid used. Chemical peels can either be administered to penetrate superficial, medium or deep. Generally, superficial skin peeling targets fine lines, sun damage, acne and rosacea. The medium type chemical peel is for minor wrinkling, sun damage and actinic keratosis. Deep peels are used for the more serious wrinkling, scar and sun damage.

One advantage of using chemical peels is evening out uneven skin pigmentation in the form of sun spots, age spots, liver spots, freckles and contraceptive or hormonal caused splotching such as melasma. Skin peeling also brightens up dull looking skin.

• Glycolic Peels

Glycolic Acid is a naturally occurring chemical belonging to the Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) family. Derived from sugar cane this important AHA is the smallest of the fruit acids and is able to penetrate the skin, allowing it to effectively dissolve the “glue” that holds dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. This keretalitic action results in deeper exfoliation without visible peeling. It tightens pores, reduces oil, smooth texture and provides an immediate burst of radiance.

• Lactic Acid Peels

Lactic Acid peels are also AHAs but derived from milk and have the least chance of allergic reaction since our skin has lactic acid naturally found in it, produced by our own bodies. This is a great place to start if you’ve never had a peel before, have very sensitive skin or are looking for the mildest solution. It makes a great add-on to our facials. It has the ability to clear out toxins, lift dead skin cells and debris while also helping with collagen production and hydration leaving your skin feeling supple and luminous. There is no “peeling” expected with this mild choice.

Microdermabrasion is a proven treatment for removing the top most layer of skin, leaving it supple and vibrant. This unique procedure removes dead, flaky skin cells while stimulating the production of fresh, younger skin cells and collagen.

The DiamondTome wand removes the top most layer of skin by gently and painlessly exfoliating the skin with natural diamond chips while at the same time vacuuming the dead skin cells away. This process leaves a smoother texture to the skin and promotes the growth of healthy new skin cells.

There is no downtime associated with this treatment. This may be for general rejuvenation or treating specific needs. The average number of treatments (approximately 4-10) depends on the condition you are treating:
